How to bulk edit product type and vendor in Shopify

Updated July 2026

Product type and vendor look like harmless text boxes, but half your store quietly keys off them: automated collections, storefront filters, discount conditions, and sales reports all match these values exactly. After a year of imports, staff edits, and supplier renames, most catalogs carry variants like T-Shirt, Tshirt, and t-shirts — and every variant splits your collections and reports a little further.

What these fields actually drive

  • Automated collections — a condition like “product type equals T-Shirt” silently excludes every product typed Tshirt.
  • Storefront search & filters — each spelling becomes its own filter option, so customers see three vendor checkboxes for one brand.
  • Reports — sales by product type or vendor split across the variants, understating every one of them.
  • Note: product type is not the product category (Shopify’s fixed taxonomy used for tax and channel mappings). Type is yours; category is Shopify’s. This guide is about type.

The cleanup workflow

  1. Audit what exists. The product list’s filter dropdowns for type and vendor are effectively a list of every distinct value in your store — including the misspellings.
  2. Pick one canonical form per real-world value and write the mapping down before editing anything.
  3. Check what references the old values. Automated collections and discounts matching Tshirt need their conditions updated to the canonical form — ideally right after the consolidation, so membership never gaps.
  4. Filter by the wrong value, set the right one, verify. One pass per stray spelling. A set-value edit is safe to re-run, so verify each pass landed before the next.

Why the native tools make this slow

Shopify’s built-in bulk editor shows type and vendor as editable columns, but every cell is typed by hand, one page of products at a time — there is no “set all 300 to Acme.” A CSV round-trip can do it with a spreadsheet formula, but the re-import has no preview, no per-product verification, and no undo if the mapping was wrong.

Doing this with SureEdit

SureEdit makes consolidation a rule-based edit: filter to the stray value (with a live match count), set the canonical type or vendor once, preview every before → after value, run, and get a verified itemized result. Originals are journaled, so a wrong mapping is one click to undo instead of a second cleanup. Type and vendor edits up to 50 products per run are free.

FAQ

What is the difference between product type and product category?
Product category is Shopify’s standardized taxonomy — it feeds tax estimates and marketplace channel mappings, and you pick it from a fixed tree. Product type is your own free-text label, used by your collections, filters, and reports. Editing the type never changes the category.

Will changing product type break my automated collections?
It changes membership, which is usually the point: collections matching the old value lose the product, collections matching the new value gain it. Before a bulk change, check which automated collections and discounts reference the old value so nothing disappears by surprise.

Are vendor names case-sensitive?
Shopify stores exactly what you type, so “Acme”, “ACME”, and “acme” are three different vendors to filters, automated collections, and reports. Pick one canonical form and consolidate — that is the whole cleanup.
