How to bulk edit SEO titles and meta descriptions in Shopify
Updated July 2026
Every Shopify product has two search-engine fields hiding under “Search engine listing” at the bottom of the product page: the SEO title (the <title> tag Google shows as the blue link) and the meta description (the snippet under it). Left blank, Shopify falls back to the product title and a truncated description — which is fine until it isn’t, and then you have hundreds of products to fix one at a time.
When bulk-editing SEO fields makes sense
- Clearing bad values at scale. A previous app or import stuffed keyword-spam SEO titles onto everything, and you want the clean product-title fallback back.
- Fixing the source text instead. Because blank SEO fields fall back to the product title and description, a find & replace on those is often the real bulk SEO edit — fix the titles once and every empty SEO field inherits it.
- Standardizing a small, uniform set. A dozen variants of the same base product, a clearance section, a temporary landing set — cases where the same crafted title and description genuinely fit every product in the filter.
When it hurts
Search engines want each page’s title and description to be distinct. Stamping one identical SEO title across 500 unrelated products creates a duplicate-title problem you didn’t have before — worse than the fallback you were trying to replace. The honest rule for fixed-value bulk SEO edits: the narrower the product filter, the safer the edit. If you can’t write one title that is accurate for every product in the set, the set is too broad.
The safe workflow
- Decide fallback vs. explicit. If the product titles are good, clearing SEO titles (or fixing product titles via find & replace) beats hand-writing hundreds of near-identical ones.
- Filter tightly — a specific collection, vendor, or title pattern — and read the matched count before running.
- Mind the display limits. Google typically shows ~50–60 characters of a title and ~155–160 of a description before truncating. Front-load what matters.
- Preview and verify. See each product’s before → after, then confirm after the run that every write landed. SEO fields fail quietly — a product whose write was dropped just keeps its old snippet, and you’ll never notice from the admin.
- Keep the old values. If rankings dip after a change, you want the previous titles back exactly, not approximately.
Doing this with SureEdit
SureEdit bulk-sets the SEO title or meta description across any filtered product set, and pairs naturally with its find & replace on product titles and descriptions for the fallback-fixing pattern above. As with every SureEdit edit, you get a per-product before → after preview, every write is re-read and verified after saving, and the previous values are journaled — so an SEO experiment that backfires is one click to roll back.

FAQ
Will editing SEO titles change my product URLs?
No. The URL handle is a separate field. SEO title and meta description only affect how the page is presented in search results — changing them never breaks links.
How long until Google shows the new titles?
After recrawl — days to a few weeks depending on the store. Google also sometimes rewrites titles it considers poor, so a snippet that doesn’t match your field exactly isn’t necessarily a failed edit; verify against the page source, not the search results.
